Under the chairship of the Republic of Angola, the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) will continue commemorating its 20th anniversary with a series of significant engagements throughout July 2024. The month will kick off with an Open Session titled "PSC@20. Brainstorming: ‘Summit of the Future’." Key activities include a meeting of the Military Staff Committee (MSC) to discuss the proliferation of mercenaries and its impact on peace and security across the continent. Informal consultations between the Council and the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security will focus on enhancing early warning systems.
The Council will also deliberate on the situations in the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo. At the Ministerial level, emphasis will be placed on the role of mediation and reconciliation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, specifically the "Luanda and Nairobi Processes." Strategic discussions will address the future of peace support operations, including financing, new configurations, coordination, and lessons learned. The half-year report on African elections from January to June 2024 will also be considered. Additionally, the Committee of Experts will prepare for the 18th Annual Joint Consultative Meeting between the UNSC and AUPSC and draft the Work Programme for August 2024.
